Tutorial Two - Sliders, Settings and other parts of the interface

This tutorial will explain what all the other checkboxs and sliders on the Syrinscape interface do.

    Start up Syrinscape.

  • Start Syrinscape, load the "Witchwood" sound set and start playback on all channels. If you don't know how to do that yet, have a look at tutorial one.

    Volume Sliders?

  • Now, let's say it's not such a windy day in your game. At the moment you should be hearing a continual wind noise. Perhaps you find that noise annoying! How do you make it softer?
  • Just grab the Loop 1 Volume Slider and turn it down (pull it left). You can control each of Syrinscape's six channels this way. Each of the four Effects channels will have a different category of sounds in it. For example channel four is usually reserved for music tracks.

    Gap Sliders?

  • Each of the Effects channels also has a Gap Slider. This slider controls the approximate gap between play back on each of channel. The smaller the number the more frequently sounds will occur.
(TECHNICAL - For example, if the Effects Gap Slider is set to 60 seconds Syrinscape will wait 30 to 90 seconds between playing each sound [that's 50% to 150% of the gap setting]. This gap is re-randomised on each element playback.)

  • Perhaps you are finding the amount of sound playback to sparse for your liking in the current setup of "Witchwood". To make sounds play back more frequently, all you have to do is pull all the Effects Gap sliders to lower numbers. Try it now.
  • You will now hear sounds more frequently than before.

    Saving your changes?

  • Now, save your adjustments. Click on Save State. Type in "Witchwood Busy" and hit the return key (or the Save Button).
  • IMPORTANT - Remember to click the Start All Effects button again to restart playback on the four Effects channels, as hitting the Load- or Save State buttons stops playback on all Effects channels.
  • You can now easily load up the 'Normal' Witchwood settings or your more 'busy' version whenever you like, with just a few clicks.

    Select Directory?

  • The long text box at the top of the Syrinscape interface displays the current source directory. This is the directory Syrinscape is looking in for sounds to play. It should contain a series of files name loop1*.* and e1*.* etc. You can set this directory by clicking the Select dir button.
  • When you select a new directory Syrinscape will run an audit of all valid audio files in the new directory, and if the "Log Audit" checkbox is checked at the bottom of the interface, the results of this audit will be displayed in the large text box down the bottom.

    Log Audit and Log Playback?

  • If the Log Audit checkbox is checked then when a new State in loaded or a new current directory is selected Syrinscape will display a list of every valid (usable) audio file in the current directory. If no files are usable for a certain channel, then you will be able to see this in the audit results.
  • If the Log Playbck checkbox is checked, then as Syrinscape runs details of each audio file (sound element) being played back will be logged in the large text box at the bottom of the interface.
  • IMPORTANT - The Syrinscape window can be resized so as to completely hide the large text box at the bottom.
